E-Bike · Jeep · Vintage Car · Pinot Noir Slopes
Book if you want to actually see the vineyard, not just the cellar. E-bike day tour (no fitness barrier — pedal assist) from Reims to the Montagne de Reims grand-cru villages: Verzenay, Mailly, Bouzy (all 100% Pinot Noir grand cru). Or a half-day jeep ride into the slopes for the broader view. The format with the broadest sub-niche range — bike, jeep, vintage car all here.
The Experience
Pinot Noir grand-cru terroir on foot/wheel, three vineyard transport options, and family-domain tastings off the Maison circuit.
Four steps from Reims to the Montagne de Reims grand-cru villages — by e-bike, jeep, or vintage car.
Meet at the Reims Champagne-Ardenne train station or a central Reims hotel ~9 AM. E-bikes (Bosch pedal-assist, 5 power levels — non-cyclists are fine), helmets, panniers for tasting purchases, and a route briefing. Jeep tours: meet at the e-bike pickup or directly in Verzenay village. Vintage car: meeting point in Épernay.
The route climbs gently from Reims south through Sillery, Verzenay, and Mailly — all 100% Pinot Noir grand-cru villages. ~25 km on e-bike with pedal assist (real distance feels like 8 km on a road bike). 3 photo stops: Verzenay's 1818 windmill, the Mailly-Champagne cooperative, and the cross at the highest point of the Montagne de Reims.
Mid-route stop at a family-grower domain in Verzenay or Mailly. 30-min vineyard walk: vine spacing, vintage variation, the 2024 harvest dates. 3-cuvée tasting with the vigneron — non-vintage Brut, Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir), and a Bouzy Rouge if the season is right.
Picnic lunch (~1 PM) at the domain or in the vines — vigneron-supplied charcuterie, chaource, baguette, paired with the family's bottling. Return ride to Reims via a different route (~2 hours, mostly downhill). Arrive back at the meeting point around 5 PM.

No — the e-bikes are Bosch pedal-assist with 5 power levels. Even non-cyclists can ride 25 km comfortably (real effort feels like 8 km on a road bike). The route is rolling rather than steep — the Montagne de Reims gains 200 m total over 25 km. Riders need to be balanced on a bike; no recent cycling experience required. Full route and gear walkthrough in our bike tour through Champagne vineyards guide.
Most operators reschedule for free if the morning forecast shows >70% rain. Light rain (drizzle, intermittent) — tour proceeds with provided rain ponchos. Lunch is indoors (family domain), so wet weather affects only the ride portion. Spring (April–May) and autumn (October) are the highest-risk months; summer is reliably dry.
Reims Champagne-Ardenne train station OR a central Reims hotel ~9 AM. Exact pickup point sent the day before. The bike outfitters store the bikes at the meeting point; you arrive without equipment, ride out with full kit (bike, helmet, pannier).
E-bike (lead tour, $222): 25 km ride through Verzenay/Mailly grand-cru villages, 3 vineyard stops, 3 tastings, picnic lunch. Half day to full day. Jeep tour ($233): half-day off-road through the steeper slopes you can't easily ride. Vintage car tour ($58): 2-hour scenic drive in a Citroën 2CV or Mehari with one tasting at the end.
Standard e-bike route covers Verzenay (100% Pinot Noir, grand cru), Mailly-Champagne (grand cru), and either Sillery (grand cru) or Bouzy (premier cru, sometimes referred to as grand cru for Bouzy Rouge still wine). All on the Montagne de Reims north face.
Children 14+ accepted on most operators (must be able to ride independently). Under 14 is rare because the 25 km distance is too much. Some operators offer child bikes for 10+. The wine tastings are adults-only (French AOC law sets the legal age at 18); families are accommodated with grape-juice tastings for kids.
Moulin de Verzenay — a stone windmill built in 1818, owned today by G.H. Mumm, used for receptions and as a Pinot Noir grand-cru viewpoint above the Verzenay vineyards. The most photographed Champagne landmark after the Avenue de Champagne. Most e-bike and jeep tours include a 15-min photo stop here.
Picnic lunch at the family domain or in the vines (weather permitting) — typically vigneron-supplied charcuterie, chaource and brie de Meaux cheese, fresh baguette, saucisson sec, paired with 2-3 of the family's own cuvées. 30-min seated meal, not a long sit-down. Vegetarian options must be flagged at booking.
25 km on pedal-assist e-bike with rolling terrain takes about 2 hours of actual riding (broken into 4 segments of 30 min each, with stops between). Total tour time is 7 hours = riding + 3 vineyard stops + lunch + return. Real effort feels like 8 km on a non-assisted bike.
Cyclists are subject to the French BAC limit of 0.5 g/L (same as drivers). The 3 tastings on the tour are typically 25 ml pours each (75 ml total = ~1 glass), which keeps an average adult well under the limit. The picnic lunch tastings are after the main riding portion. Operators are aware of this and pace the day accordingly.
