How Your Moët & Chandon Cellar Tour Works
Four steps from Paris pickup to the deepest crayères on the Avenue de Champagne.
Paris Hotel Pickup or TGV to Reims
Hotel pickup around 7 AM (Paris-departure tours include this). DIY option: Paris Gare de l'Est → Reims TGV (45 min, ~€30–€80) then 20 min by taxi to Épernay, or direct Paris Est → Épernay InterCités (1h15–1h30).
Avenue de Champagne Arrival
Arrive at Moët & Chandon's main building on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay — the 1-km UNESCO heritage strip where the grandes Maisons cluster. Coat-check, brief introduction, then descent into the cellars.
28 km of Crayères + Riddling Hall
Guided walk through the 28 km of chalk cellars (10–12 °C constant) carved into the gallo-roman crayères. See the riddling racks, the millions of bottles in stillness, and Madame de Pompadour's reserve. Walking shoes essential — chalk floors are uneven.
Tasting + Vigneron Lunch
Return to the tasting salon for Brut Impérial, vintage Brut, and Rosé Impérial pours with cellar-master notes. Most multi-Maison tours then drive 15 min to a family vigneron in the Vallée de la Marne for a lunch of regional charcuterie, chaource cheese, and saucisson — paired with the vigneron's own bottling.

What Visitors Say
"Tom was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and took us at our pace."
"Angelique was awesome!!! We went outside of peak season so it ended up being just me and my wife, it was pouring rain, then we got caught in a snow storm and it was still sooo much fun. The individual tastings were amazing, her knowledge of each one was awesome and while the Moet visit is very touristy and fun, Lancelot was still the best. The champagne and the food was all amazing, we are southern Americans and had concerns about how a very French experience would be and it was far beyond anything we could have expected, if we could do it again tomorrow, we absolutely would. If you are having any 2nd thoughts about whether this is the right choice or not, I assure you, it is. It was a little more expensive than other tours but it was worth every penny. Thanks again guys and thank you sooo much Angelique, you really saved what could of been a very cold and terrible day!!"
"It was a fantastic day full of information. The guide was funny, informative and kept us up beat all day!"
"This was a fantastic tour our guide was amazing! We loved seeing the big champagne house like Moët and also visiting the smaller ones. We all loved our lunch and we met some lovely people. The scenery was beautiful also."
"Great tour guide, great food and informative visits. Enjoyed the food pairing."
"Our tour was more than we expected. Or guide Martin was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. His knowledge of champagne was amazing and we tasted over 9 different champagnes. The wine tasting and included lunch were also a treat. Highly recommended."
"The tour guide Tom was awesome, he helped to make a great group with the other tourists."

Practical answers for visiting Moët & Chandon in Épernay.
The cellar visit itself is 90 minutes — facade, descent into the 28 km of crayères, riddling-rack hall, return to the tasting salon for 3 cuvées with cellar-master notes. Combined with vigneron lunch and a second visit, full-day tours run 7–10 hours; private tours can extend to 12.5. Full minute-by-minute walkthrough in our Moët cellar tour what to expect guide.
20 Avenue de Champagne, 51200 Épernay — the central UNESCO heritage strip. The visitor entrance is on the courtyard side. From Épernay station: 15-min walk or 5 min by taxi. Most tours include hotel pickup or designated meeting point.
Standard cellar visits include Moët Brut Impérial, Vintage Brut, and Rosé Impérial. Dom Pérignon vintage tastings are a separate premium upgrade (~$250 supplement) — confirm at booking. The Dom Pérignon Abbey in Hautvillers (10 km away) is a separate visit not always included.
Children 6+ can join the cellar walk (no tasting). Most tour operators set the minimum at 12 because the floor is uneven chalk and the 90-min descent is too long for younger kids. Under 18 cannot taste — French AOC tastings require legal age 18.
Approximately 28 million bottles — making Moët the volume leader of the Champagne grandes Maisons. The 28 km of cellars hold roughly 90 million bottles at any time, since aging takes 12–36 months on lees plus 3–9 months bottling-to-release.
Constant 10–12 °C year round — the same temperature in July as in January. The chalk crayères regulate temperature naturally; air conditioning is not used. Bring a layer (fleece or light jacket) regardless of season. Walks last 45–90 min.
For first-time visitors, yes — Moët's volume and Avenue de Champagne UNESCO setting make it the canonical Champagne experience. For repeat visitors, a family-grower vigneron tour ($150–$300) often delivers more access, smaller groups, and a more personal tasting. Many multi-stop tours bundle both. Our grandes marques decision guide compares all five featured Maisons by traveller profile.
Brut Impérial is the non-vintage flagship (assemblage of 100+ wines from multiple harvests, 12+ months on lees, 80+ million bottles/year). Vintage Brut is declared only in exceptional years (recent: 2013, 2015), spends 36+ months on lees, and is 100% from that harvest. Vintage is typically 2× the price.
Yes — the tasting salon includes a boutique with the full range, often at prices similar to the duty-free at Charles-de-Gaulle. Some collector cuvées (Grand Vintage Rosé, the Dom Pérignon range) are only available at the cellar or specialist retailers. Bring photo ID for customs declaration if exporting outside the EU.
Walk-ins are accepted in low season (November–March) on weekdays. From April to October, weekend visits are 100% booked-ahead, and even weekdays sell out 1–2 weeks ahead in shoulder season (May–June, September). For tour packages, book 10+ days ahead for any Saturday.
