"We had a wonderful day that began with an engaging cellar and tasting tour at Veuve Clicquot, followed by an incredible lunch at a charming, family-run vineyard. We then visited the church in Hautvillers, where Dom Pérignon, a monk and cellar master whose work is closely tied to the birthplace of champagne and is laid to rest here. From there, we took in breathtaking views of the valley before ending the day with a tasting at a micro champagne house. It was truly one of the highlights of our trip and an unforgettable experience from start to finish."

How Your Veuve Clicquot Cellar Tour Works
Four steps from Paris pickup to the UNESCO-listed crayères of Reims.
Paris Hotel Pickup or 45-Min TGV to Reims
Hotel pickup around 7 AM (Paris-departure tours). DIY: Paris Est → Reims TGV in 45 min direct (most departures), or via the Champagne-Ardenne TGV station ~8 km from central Reims (Bezannes commune).
Reims & the Coronation Cathedral
Reims is the 'coronation city' where 33 French kings were crowned. The Maison sits 15 minutes from the cathedral — most multi-stop tours include a 30-min stop at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame on the way.
24 km of Gallo-Roman Crayères
Descend 18 m into the chalk pits originally dug by Gallo-Romans for stone, repurposed in the 18th century for Champagne aging. UNESCO-listed since 2015. The temperature is constant 10 °C — bring a layer. The riddling racks where Madame Clicquot's 1816 invention is still demonstrated.
Tasting + Vigneron Lunch
Tasting includes Yellow Label Brut (non-vintage flagship, 12+ months on lees) and the vintage cuvée. Multi-Maison day tours then drive to a family vigneron in the Montagne de Reims for a lunch of charcuterie and chaource cheese with the vigneron's own bottling.

Practical answers for visiting the Veuve Clicquot UNESCO crayères in Reims.
TGV Paris Gare de l'Est → Reims-Centre, 45 minutes direct on most departures. The Champagne-Ardenne TGV station is around 8 km west of central Reims via the Bezannes commune — convenient if your tour starts there, less so if you need central Reims. The Veuve Clicquot Maison is a 10-min taxi from Reims-Centre. For the full Paris-to-Champagne options, see our TGV vs TER vs Tour guide.
Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (Veuve = widow, Clicquot is her late husband's name) invented the table de remuage (riddling rack) in 1816 — the inclined wooden A-frame holding bottles neck-down. By rotating bottles a quarter-turn daily over weeks, the dead-yeast sediment (lees) settles into the neck, where it can be expelled (dégorgement) cleanly. Every traditional-method sparkling wine still uses this technique.
Yes — the chalk pits beneath Reims were originally quarried by the Gallo-Romans (1st–4th century AD) for building stone. They were rediscovered and repurposed for Champagne aging in the 18th century. The Veuve Clicquot crayères descend 18 m below street level, span 24 km of tunnels, and were UNESCO-listed in 2015 as part of the 'Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne' inscription.
No — Reims and Épernay are 45 km apart and have distinct Maison clusters. Reims hosts Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Mumm, Ruinart and Taittinger. Épernay hosts Moët & Chandon, Mercier and Perrier-Jouët. Most day tours from Paris combine both cities; a Reims-only tour misses Moët, and an Épernay-only tour misses Veuve.
The Maison visit itself is 90 minutes — reception, descent into the 24 km of crayères, riddling-rack demonstration, return for a 2-cuvée tasting (Yellow Label Brut + Vintage). Full-day tours with vigneron lunch and a second Maison run 7.5 hours; private chauffeur formats run 8–10.
Veuve Clicquot's Yellow Label Brut is the non-vintage flagship — an assemblage of 50–60 wines from multiple harvests, predominantly Pinot Noir (50–55%), Chardonnay (28–33%), and Pinot Meunier (15–20%), aged 12+ months on lees, plus 15+ months bottling-to-release. The yellow label has been the house signature since 1877.
Yellow Label is non-vintage (~$60–80 retail); Vintage Brut is from a declared single year (~$80–120). La Grande Dame is the prestige cuvée — vintage-only (recent: 2008, 2012, 2015), from the 8 grand-cru villages of Madame Clicquot's holdings, aged 7+ years on lees. Retail $180–250; tasted at Veuve only on the premium tour upgrades.
Most full-day Veuve tours include a 30-min stop at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims on the way (the 'coronation cathedral' where 33 French kings were crowned). The cathedral is free to enter; the famous Chagall stained-glass windows are in the apse. Premium private tours can extend this to a 90-min guided cathedral visit on request.
Children 12+ accepted on most operator tours (no tasting, as French law requires 18 for AOC wine tastings). Under 12 is rare — the 18-m descent and 18 m of stairs back up is too much. Strollers cannot enter the cellars. Family-friendly alternative: the Veuve Tasting Salon above ground.
Constant 10–12 °C year round — the chalk regulates temperature naturally without air conditioning. Bring a fleece or jacket even in July. Closed-toe walking shoes essential — chalk floors are uneven and damp. The tour lasts 45 minutes underground.
